Wir sprechen nicht nur mit dem Mund, sondern auch mit den Händen. Gesten sind ein genuiner Bestandteil des Sprechens und der Sprache. Die Erarbeitung von Grundlagen einer multimodalen Grammatik sowie deren neurologische und evolutionäre Fundierung für ausgewählte Teilbereiche ist Gegenstand des interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekts „Towards a grammar of gesture: evolution, brain, and linguistic structures“. Die Schwerpunkte liegen dabei zum einen auf den Formen, Strukturen und Funktionen redebegleitender Gesten allein, zum anderen auf der Integrierbarkeit von Gesten in lautsprachliche Grammatikkonzepte. Die Volkswagenstiftung fördert dieses Projekt, an dem die Disziplinen Linguistik und Semiotik (Prof. Dr. Cornelia Müller, Dr. Ellen Fricke), Neurologie (PD Dr. med. Hedda Lausberg) und Primatologie (Dr. Katja Liebal) beteiligt sind, über einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren mit der Fördersumme von 975.000 Euro.
